A Canadian accountant with a passion for New York has become a $15-million-a, year job in the Big Apple, earning him the title of the city’s “most successful and well-paid resident.”
The job, which is now open for more than a year, requires an accountant to handle all of the finances of New York’s nearly 20 million residents.
“The job description itself is pretty simple,” said Scott Wylie, the owner of Canadian accountant firm Wylies Global and a member of the council of Canadian tax professionals, who have been in negotiations with the city for a year to have it expanded.
Wyly said the company, which provides accounting services to individuals and corporations in the U.S. and abroad, is currently hiring for the New York office and will be expanding soon to its other Canadian office. “
Once that’s done, we’re going to be able to expand our business here.”
Wyly said the company, which provides accounting services to individuals and corporations in the U.S. and abroad, is currently hiring for the New York office and will be expanding soon to its other Canadian office.
Wyls first client, a company in New Zealand, had already offered him a job as a full-time accountant.
“They were looking for someone who had the technical ability to handle everything from accounting, to financial planning, to tax planning,” Wylys business partner, Scott Houghton, told CBC News.
“He had a really good background in that field and had the experience.”
With the city now on board, the company will also expand its business to other cities in Canada, the U., Mexico and the U: “We’re hoping that other cities will look at us as well,” Houghtons partner, John Larkin, told the CBC.
“But at the same time, we need to have our own office and be in Canada to make sure we can meet the standards of the tax office.”
Wyslies’ client is the city of New Orleans, which recently voted to allow tax professionals to work in its city without requiring an appointment.
“I think it’s a good move by the city and the city has always been a place where the best tax professionals can work,” said Houghts partner, Michael Gagnon, who is also an accountant.
The city of Montreal, meanwhile, has a citywide requirement that all tax professionals must have a full and fair financial education.
Gagnons business partner said they were surprised at how many of their clients were from New York.
“You have people that come in from all over the world, and they can’t find a job,” said Gagnion.
“A lot of them are coming from Canada and they’re going back home, so we’re seeing a lot of those guys and we’ve had some really good, successful ones in Montreal.”
Houghson said that while they have yet to hire an accountant in Montreal, he believes the city can help attract talented people.
“Montreal is a big city and it has a big market,” he said.
Gagnone said the city should also make it easier for local professionals to obtain tax licenses. “
It’s not a place that’s really in the national spotlight, but we want to make Montreal a global city.”
Gagnone said the city should also make it easier for local professionals to obtain tax licenses.
“There are so many opportunities to do business in the city,” he added.
“So it’s not as if New York can’t offer that as well.”
